Julia R.Nunley, Algin B. Garrett Residency Coordinator Residency ProgramThe Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center Department of Dermatology offers a three year residency program which leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Dermatology. The Department of Dermatology also offers a fellowship in procedural dermatology. Residency begins with the PGY-2year and must be preceded by a broad-based clinical year in an ACGME accredited program or similar program credited by Canada. Currently there are two residency slots per year and applicants are usually accepted a year in advance. The residency is organized to furnish trainees with the educational and practical experience necessary to provide superior medical care to patients with a wide variety of skin conditions. Residents spend six months during the first and second year of training at the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center and six months each year at the Medial College of Virginia Hospital. The third year is spent solely at Medical College of Virginia Hospitals. The population of patients served the Medical College of Virginia Hospital and the McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center is extensive and fascinating. As a tertiary referral center, many of the cases seen are rare and unusual. The department is actively involved with the diagnosis and management of cutaneous disorders in the inpatient as well as out-patient setting. Faculty expertise includes medical dermatology, dermatopathology, as well as surgical dermatology. Surgical experience includes Mohs Micrographic surgery and laser surgery. All faculty members are active in the training program. Most of the resident's time is spent in the clinical arena. Residents work in the Resident-Clinic providing direct dermatology care, supervised by a faculty member, as well as in the Private Clinics. In-patient consultative services are provided by the consult team which is lead by a senior resident and a faculty member. Opportunities to conduct research are available. Specific schedules are outlined for the three years of training; however, there may be some room for flexibility.
