Medical/General Dermatology

The faculty of the Department of Dermatology have the expertice and experience to provide dermatologic care to patients with a wide variety of conditions. We offer comprehensive consultative services for all dermatologic problems affecting the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.

General dermatologic conditions for which we offer comprehensive medical therapy include acne and rosacea, psoriasis and eczemas, warts, hairloss, nail disorders, sundamage, melanoma, mole evaluations and drug eruptions.

In addition, several of our physicians have a special interest and experience in medical dermatology including primary blistering disorders, cutaneous lymphomas, and dermatologic conditions associated with internal diseases such as dermatomyositis, lupus, vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, panniculitis, Behcet's, scleroderma, graft-versus-host disease, infectious diseases (including HIV, HCV), as well as other liver and renal-related diseases, such as caldiphylaxis, etc.

Our physicians are knowledgable and highly qualified to use potent immune modulating medications including the biologic agents. Several of our physicians are enrolled in the S.T.E.P.S. and iPledge programs allowing for the safe prescribing of thalidomide and isotretinoin, respectively.

Other non-surgical services available through the department include patchtesting, phototherapy (UVA, PUVA, broadband and narrow band UVB), extracorporeal photophoresis, photodynamic therapy, and ionophoresis.

In addition, our physicians provide urgent and emergent dermatologic consultation to patients admitted to the VCU Medical Center and to those in the Emergency Department.
