Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Dermatologic surgery is the surgical management of benign and malignant skin lesions. Common, difficult and rare skin conditions can be treated with a wide range of both surgical and non surgical modalities. Other services (both surgical and non surgical) such as excisions, biopsies, laser surgery and Mohs Micrographic Surgery are available. Procedures that aren't skin caner related are also provided in the VCU Medical center Department of Dermatology.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is a highly specialized outpatient surgery that offers the best cure rate for many common and rare forms of skin cancers, while sparing healthy tissue. MMS is a refinement of the innovation in 1936 by Dr. Frederick H. Mohs. Mohs surgery uniquely orients maps and processes tissue, which allows virtually 100% of the specimen to be examined. The completeness of the tissue margin evaluation permits the accurate identification and removal of residual tumor. Since the precision of

This technique allows for margin control the cure rates with this surgery are very high. Primary (untreated) skin cancers have cures of 98% for basal cell carcinomas and 94% for squamous cell carcinomas. The cure rates for previously treated skin cancers or recurrent skin cancers are 94% and 90% respectively for BCC and SCC.

Our Mohs surgeons are board certified dermatologists who have additional training in MMS with extensive experience in the Mohs technique. Mohs surgeons are both in the removal of the caner and the repair of the defect resulting from removal of the cancer and repair of the resulting defect.
