We are Dermatology at VCU: A Message from our Chair

Welcome to the Department of Dermatology at VCU School of Medicine — a distinguished department with a history dating back to 1905. For more than 120 years, the VCU Department of Dermatology has delivered comprehensive basic and complex dermatologic care to central Virginians, addressing skin conditions from acne to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

The department’s primary mission is to provide exemplary educational opportunities for students and residents, drive advancements in dermatology through innovative research, maintain high standards of clinical excellence for patients, and foster a supportive environment for faculty, staff, learners and patients. Graduates of the residency program have gone on to hold prominent positions within both community and academic dermatology.

As Department Chair, there is a strong commitment to furthering this legacy. Upcoming initiatives include the launch of multidisciplinary clinics in collaboration with specialists across the health system, significant expansion of the clinical enterprise to serve additional patients throughout Virginia and enhanced clinical trials capabilities to offer advanced treatments. The department will also continue to strengthen partnerships with basic science departments at VCU School of Medicine to deepen understanding of skin disease and innovate therapeutic approaches, particularly in immunology and inflammatory disorders.

On behalf of the faculty, residents, staff and fellows, all are invited to explore the VCU Department of Dermatology, its accomplished faculty, dedicated staff and dynamic residency program.

Residency

The VCU Department of Dermatology offers a three-year residency program that leads to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Dermatology. Our program begins with the second post-graduate year (PGY-2), and residents must complete a broad-based clinical year in an ACGME-accredited program or similar program accredited in Canada.

Life in Richmond

Urban life with a small-town feel

We encourage our students and researchers to maintain a healthy work-life balance, and Richmond is a wonderful place to engage in that well-rounded lifestyle. As the capital of Virginia since 1779, Richmond attracts students, faculty and staff from around the globe. The city’s location affords easy day trips to destinations like Washington, DC, Virginia Beach, Colonial Williamsburg and the Blue Ridge Mountains, among others.

As a mid-sized city with a metropolitan population of 1.3 million, Richmond provides stimulating activities while maintaining its intimate feel and unique vibe. Vibrant neighborhoods offer distinct, diverse experiences, with no shortage of art galleries, museums, music venues, restaurants, breweries and parks. For the outdoor enthusiast, you can’t beat the offerings in the city’s riverfront parks and urban wilderness areas such as white-water rafting, hiking, mountain biking and festivals.
